The Game
Scare Crow is a playful stealth game in which players must fend off an army of hungry squirrels from invading a backyard rich with birdfeeders. Play as Casey, a nonchalant crow whose relaxing lifestyle is crudely interrupted by Sergeant Squeak and his troop of squirrels determined to steal every last bit of Casey's birdseed. Set traps, scare squirrels, and defeat Sergeant Squeak to ensure that the birdfeed remains yours to indulge in!
Scare Crow is under development as a USC Advanced Games Project and expects launch and expo exhibition in May 2025.
Takeaways
Team behavior is largely set by leadership expectations. Cultivating desired behaviors and attitudes in team members goes beyond passive encouragement -- it’s figuring out how to develop habit in another person.
An assigned task is only as good as the oversight given over the duration of a sprint.
Communication between sub-teams about macro-level progress/decisions is essential for maintaining both a positive team culture and a cohesive execution of the director’s vision.
Contributions
My associate producer role on Scare Crow centers around working closely with the design team (3) to take the game design from alpha, to beta, to release. Since joining the team in January, I have:
Engaged in frequent scoping discussions with the lead producer and design lead to set realistic milestone goals whilst preserving both the director’s vision and existing design work
Set up formal biweekly tasking for design team members using Notion, the team’s standard information tool
Conducted biweekly stand-up meetings with the design team to evaluate progress and present the previously-discussed path forward, adapting when necessary to unfinished work
Supervised design discussions, taking notes for use as a team reference and stepping in when necessary to keep the conversation productive, efficient, and in scope
